Whenever we go anywhere in Spain we pack up a picnic for lunch to make sure that we can eat some nutritious vegetarian food (not always guaranteed in Andalucia) in a stunning setting (always guaranteed in Andalusia). Last week we went to meet a few people in the area that we have been in email contact with since we set up here. The trip consisted of a big loop, from here to Marbella we then headed up into the mountains, through the transition town of Coin, where we met Anthony, owner of the retreat Molino del Rey. From there we drove the windy mountain roads and through Ronda to a small village called Algotacin where we met Maite and her partner Fernando.
It was an incredible journey and Anthony, Maite and Fernando were all unique and talented people living life just outside the norm. We stopped in between meetings to have our picnic, passing up a few choice spots on the roadside I was resigned to eating wherever we found and laughed when Adam expressed his hope for a better spot with a picnic table...when lo and behold...there it was! Perfect time, perfect place accompanied by a perfect Indian picnic.
The roadside picnic areas are called 'miradors' or lookouts. And this certainly was.
There was a 'pueblo blanco' in the background, which is the typical Spanish white village. Although our meal of Indian picnic was not in theme, it was delicious. We had Bombay potato sandwiches with mint and tamarind chutney, a potato, chickpea and cauliflower dry red curry and a raita salad which was kind of like an Indian coleslaw. It really doesn't get much better than this.
You certainly wouldn't get this in the local village tapas bar!
