India Update

Today is an update from India, we've been so busy travelling and adjusting and setting up that we've been behind on the blog.  So this is a catch up.  When we first arrived we went to Auroville, near Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu.  Auroville's mission statement is this:

"Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity."

And to get some idea of the place try looking on the website:  Auroville.  We had been there last time we were in India and as we had to leave London earlier than things were starting here in Mysore we thought it would be a good place reintroduction for us, plus we had some great food memories we wanted to relive!

The main place for lunch is the Solar Kitchen, where you take your thali plate and walk along the food buffet as you are served your selections.  We were lucky on the first day that it was dosa and uttapam day, there were 2 coconut chutneys and the delicious yoghurt salad dressing that was there everyday.  The food is the closest to home cooking we've found outside of a home, fresh, light and low on the oil.

Our other food memory was the idly sambhar from the Visitors Centre, when we first went there a few years ago we were only used to the restaurant sambhar from our local cafe in Mapusa, Goa which was a red colour and later clear to us that it was likely made using a packet spice mix.  We weren't so sure about the light yellow sambhar here at first, but quickly realised that it was a much superior item.  We had the idly everyday for breakfast last time and did the same thing this time around.

Finally after a hair raising 10 hour taxi drive from Tamil Nadu to Mysore we arrived at our new home, Rashinkar Mansions, a  5 minute walk to our yoga school, the KPJAYI (K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute).  And this is kind of where the story begins for us as we now have 3 months here, waking up at 3.30am for our 4.30 class.

Our kitchen is set up and we've made a few lunches of old reliable recipes to get us in the swing of it all, and making use of our blog as we had originally intended it to be, a collection of our favourite recipes to hand.  We are looking for some authentic Indian cook books to try some new recipes too and take advantage of the fresh ingredients here that are so easily available and at a fraction of the cost in the UK.
