While we were in Vancouver we discovered a hot, caffeine free drink called Polish Pillow, which we found was made from a coffee type substitute from Poland called Krakus. Once we discovered Krakus we never looked back and there weren't many nights that didn't end with the warm, soothing drink.
In Tarifa we found the same type of drink named Echo, which I had heard of years ago while working in a cafe in Kings Cross in Sydney (funny enough we used to laugh at the people that ordered Echo soya latte saying 'really what is the point...now I am one of those people).
When we were in London it was Bambu that filled the gap and now in India we looked for something similar but couldn't find it....but hey ho....what's this??? Something better!!!
This sprouted ragi malt drink contains ragi, soya, wheat, moong, and bengal gram which doesn't sound like a tasty evening drink but when added to warmed milk or soya milk it has a lovely malty taste like Horlicks and is dare I say our new favourite.
Ragi is a grain that is also known as finger millet and has many health properties. It is especially valuable as it contains the amino acid methionine which is lacking in the diets of people who live on starchy staples. Ragi flour is made into flatbreads, including thick. leavened rosa and roti.
In Tamil Nadu ragi is considered to be the holy food of Amman, the Goddess Kali and the women make ragi porridge in the temples to distribute to the poor or needy.
We agree that this drink is a holy food, and wonderful to find something so good that is so good for you.
