Secret Breakfast Place in Mysore

Yesterday we felt like we were initiated as we were added to 'those in the know' of the Secret Breakfast Place as it is called.  I mean, how can that name not intrigue and create mystery and promise of the best breakfast in Mysore?  I think it was about 2 weeks ago that we first heard about it and started to feel like we were missing out on something Really Good.

When we asked where it was, nobody could tell us exactly 'it's complicated' they said, somewhere in Laxmipuram near the old shala...but I can't say it in words....this only added to our sense that something was being kept from us, well that and the 'name'.

Then came an invitation to join some new friends for Saturday breakfast at The Secret Breakfast place!!  We were in...'do we have to come blindfolded'?  I asked, but no, it's just complicated to find, not all that 'Secret'.  So on a cool, somewhat rainy morning we set off, 4 scooters, 7 yoga students and 1 husband.

Secret Breakfast Chefs
As it turns out, it was pretty complicated to give directions, and there really was no name, it was just a small place, under a tarpaulin.  Not so secret as place with no name that's hard to find.  It was one of those local places with no menu, they would just tell you what they had as you look around to see which one looks best.  My eyes went to a set dosa, my new favourite dish, but I as I was being assured that the idli was the best, I kind of missed my turn at ordering, which somehow I felt would end up with me being given what I was destined to have.  Which it did, a steaming plate of 2 idli and one vada turned up accompanied by sambhar and coconut chutney.

Idli, vada, sambhar and chutney..I had to start before the photo

It was indeed a good idli and a treat to have a vada and although it was a chilly morning and good to have some spice, for me it was a little too spicy, and I think after our trip to Mylari for the butter dosa last week my expectations were high.

Sharing food with new friends, fantastic
For us, the best part of the breakfast and the morning was being with new friends and sharing a unique food experience, having a laugh at guessing the bill to win a free breakfast (rules need to be reviewed) and trying to guess whether the male cow that showed up for his chapati breakfast (surely on our bill too) had been castrated or not and whether he was a bull or a bullock.

Bull??
Would we rush back for the food, not really, but would we accompany our new friends on this or any other Mysore food adventure again?  Can't wait!  Thanks for leading us here guys, and looking forward to GTR next week!  By the way...the bill came to a total of 205 rupees, about $5, for 7 yoga students, 1 husband, 1 cow and one bull (we think).

  2. The place looks some what weird to me, but I hope you enjoyed your breakfast. However, meal in every corner of Mysore is delicious and mouthwatering. That's the reason Mysore cuisine specially fast foods like Iddli sambhar, Meddu Vadda, Vadda Sambhar, Masala Dosa, Uthapam, etc... are not only popular in India but also they are highly demanded worldwide.

  3. you guys are brave to eat breakfast on the roadside! As someone who grew up in Mysore, I can say that GTR still makes the best Dosas in town.

  4. Hi HOtel United - agreed, breakfast in particular is the best in Mysore, we have it everyday while we are here, but some places are more special than others.

Hi Savim - we thought it was brave too, but friends had no trouble and neither did we. We went to GTR, the dosa was a bit too greasy but very tasty indeed. I think we'll be back. We also like Mylari too.
