Mylari Dosa House, Mysore

Last time I was in Mysore we heard about this place on the other side of town that made amazing dosas, that Bollywood stars go there and that it was really small hole in the wall kind of place.  We didn't make it there then but this time we did, and wow is it worth the drive.  We thought we knew dosas after spending so much time in India but these are something else, different texture, taste and in their own category entirely.

Firstly, they are softer than the think crispy kind of dosa we've had before, they are more light and fluffy like a set dosa and definitely have a fermented taste in a good way, also they are served with butter on top and we think cooked in butter, pure heaven.  They are served directly onto your plate which is covered in banana leaf, and the chutney comes on the side from a large dish, which they are very forthcoming with.  The chutney is also very fresh and coconutty, not watery like some cafes.

The menu is small, they only have the plain dosa, masala dosa which has a vegetable filling unlike the typical potatoes and onion and idly.  But as they specialise in dosa we have one of the plain and one of the filled.

The cafe is also small and old style, there are about 6 tables in the front with another 2 by the hands wash station, almost in the kitchen itself, I think in Michelin starred restaurants these are now called the 'Chef's Table'.  Not quite the same idea here but an experience I'm sure none the less.

The bill at Mylari came to about 86 rupees for 2 plain dosa, 2 masala dosa and 2 coffees, a bargain for the unique and tasty experience.

Although driving across town, through the main part of Mysore is not fun, for Mylari and the dosas it's worth it.  We will definitely be missing these when we are back in the UK.

  3. Julia - these are the most unique dosas we have ever found, completely different to anywhere else and a reason for returning to Mysore...as if we need one!

Michelle - I can imagine how much you miss these places, we will back in London soon and also missing the doasa houses and their fresh coconut chutney, impossible to replicate outside of India!
